Malmö FF are on the verge of securing Eirik Horneland as their new head coach following the departure of Miguel Ángel Ramírez. According to Expressen, only minor details remain before the parties reach full agreement.
The 51-year-old Norwegian has yet to sign a contract but Malmö FF appears to be his most likely destination. The Swedish giants have had Horneland high on their shortlist for some time as they search for a new manager.
Horneland has also been linked with the vacant coaching position at Norwegian club Brann, but Malmö's status as a major club and their long-term vision are reportedly key factors attracting him to the move. Sporting director Philip Berglund and football director Daniel Andersson have already presented their project to the experienced coach.
The club's ambition is to have their new manager in place before players return from their break in mid-June. Malmö have been specifically targeting a Scandinavian coaching profile, and Horneland's philosophy of high-pressing, intensive football aligns perfectly with the club's desired playing style.
Horneland brings significant experience having previously managed clubs including Brann and French side Saint-Étienne. Should negotiations fall through, Malmö reportedly have alternative candidates prepared as they look to build on their position as Sweden's most successful club in European competition.
