Players must leave the pitch within 10 seconds during substitutions as Swedish football introduces sweeping rule changes to combat time-wasting

Swedish football is set to implement major rule changes from July 1st, with substituted players now having just 10 seconds to leave the pitch before their replacement must wait an additional minute to enter the game.

The new regulations will apply across Allsvenskan, Superettan, Damallsvenskan and Elitettan, with other Swedish leagues following suit in 2027. The changes, developed by IFAB, specifically target time-wasting tactics that have plagued the modern game.

"The hope is that the rule changes will make it less profitable to waste time," said Jan Berg, the Swedish Football Associationrules official.

Referees will gain new powers to combat delays, including a five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks. If players fail to restart play within this timeframe, possession switches to the opposing team. Teams that delay goal kicks risk conceding corner kicks to their opponents.

Injured players receiving on-field treatment will be required to leave the pitch for one minute when medical staff enter the field. This dual approach aims to reduce unnecessary stoppages while providing adequate time for proper injury assessment.

Additionally, players will no longer receive yellow cards for certain offences if the opposing team scores during the same attacking phase. The comprehensive changes represent Swedish football's commitment to increasing effective playing time and reducing the tactical manipulation of match flow.
