Malmö FF are bracing for another substantial financial loss in 2026 as the Swedish champions struggle to recover from an 89 million kronor deficit posted in 2025. Club chairman Zlatko Rihter has described 2026 as "quite a tough year" while outlining plans to achieve financial balance by 2027.
The absence of European football has been identified as a key factor behind the projected losses, with remaining costs from 2025 continuing to burden the club's finances. Malmö, traditionally one of Sweden's most successful clubs with multiple Allsvenskan titles, are now facing a period of significant restructuring.
"There's no doubt about it," Rihter stated when asked about plans to sell more players than they sign during the summer transfer window, according to Fotbollskanalen.
The club's ambitious squad reduction plan will see player numbers cut from approximately 45 to around 30 over time. Management hasn't ruled out buying out existing player contracts to accelerate this process, though they remain committed to maintaining competitive performance on the pitch.
The restructuring process is expected to require several transfer windows to complete, with Rihter emphasizing that short-term decisions must also be sustainable in the long run. This marks a significant shift for Malmö, who have been regular participants in European competitions and remain Sweden's most successful club in continental tournaments.
