IF Elfsborg have secured one of their most experienced players for the long term, confirming that Simon Hedlund has signed a new contract that runs through the 2028 season. The 33-year-old's previous deal had been due to expire on 31 December this year.

Hedlund is no stranger to Elfsborg, the Borås-based Allsvenskan club. He first left the club back in 2016 when he made the move to German outfit Union Berlin, before later joining Danish side Bröndby IF. His return to Elfsborg came in the summer of 2023, and he has made the most of every minute since.

This season alone, Hedlund has featured in every single Allsvenskan match, underlining just how important he has become to the side. He now has a total of 168 appearances in the Swedish top flight to his name – a remarkable tally for a player who has spent significant parts of his career abroad.

Club director Stefan Andreasson has reportedly highlighted Hedlund's value to the squad since his return three years ago, describing the winger as a key figure within the group. For his part, Hedlund has made clear he is not slowing down – with European football and a league title said to be firmly in his sights.

Elfsborg have been one of Allsvenskan's stronger clubs in recent seasons, and keeping a player of Hedlund's experience and consistency locked in until 2028 will be seen as a significant boost to their ambitions both domestically and on the continent.
