A Sirius supporter has been sentenced to pay 5,700 kronor in fines after throwing a lit flare back at Västerås SK fans following their clubs' derby match in April.
The incident occurred after Sirius defeated Västerås SK 4-1 at Studenternas IP in Uppsala. Both sets of supporters were being escorted by police on opposite sides of the Fyrisån river when violence erupted in the city center.
According to SVT, a VSK supporter first threw a lit flare across the river toward the Sirius fans. A person from the Sirius group picked up the flare and hurled it back, with the pyrotechnic eventually landing in the water.
The Sirius fan was immediately arrested at the scene and has now been convicted of violating laws regarding flammable and explosive materials. The man admitted to the offense, telling authorities he threw the flare back "to make a statement against the other supporter group."
"I threw the flare back to mark against the other supporter group," the convicted fan stated, while maintaining that the flare was not his and that he had not brought it to the location.
Police filed three additional reports related to the match, though none resulted in charges. It remains unclear whether the VSK supporter who initially threw the flare has been identified or faces prosecution, with assistant prosecutor Emmy Pettersson noting the original throw "was not covered by this investigation."
